What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that mimics the GLP-1 hormone released in the gut in response to eating. It slows stomach emptying, reduces appetite, and helps regulate blood sugar. Clinical trials (STEP program) showed average weight loss of 15-17% over 68 weeks.

FDA Approval Status

FDA-approved: Wegovy for chronic weight management (2021), Ozempic for type 2 diabetes (2017), Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes (2019).

Dosing Schedule

Injection: 0.25mg once weekly for 4 weeks, then titrated up to 2.4mg. Oral (Rybelsus): 3mg daily titrated to 14mg.

Eligibility Criteria

Adults with BMI ≥30 kg/m², or BMI ≥27 kg/m² with at least one weight-related condition (type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol).
