Medicare & GLP-1 Medications: What's Covered in 2025

Important Note for 2025

Medicare coverage for GLP-1 medications specifically for weight loss remains limited. Coverage exists for diabetes indications. This page reflects the current regulatory landscape as of 2025.

Does Medicare Cover GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications?

As of 2025, Medicare does not broadly cover GLP-1 medications solely for weight loss. However, the landscape is evolving. Here is what is currently covered:

Wegovy (semaglutide) for weight loss

Not covered under current Medicare rules for obesity alone

Zepbound (tirzepatide) for weight loss

Not covered under current Medicare rules for obesity alone

Ozempic (semaglutide) for type 2 diabetes

Covered under Part D when prescribed for diabetes

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for type 2 diabetes

Covered under Part D when prescribed for diabetes

Rybelsus (oral semaglutide) for diabetes

Covered under Part D for diabetes indication

The Inflation Reduction Act & Future Coverage

The Inflation Reduction Act (2022) eliminated the Medicare Part D coverage exclusion for obesity drugs, but full implementation for weight-loss specific use has been gradual. Proposed rules from CMS aim to expand coverage, but as of 2025, broad coverage for weight loss alone is not yet in effect.

What Medicare Part D Covers

Medicare Part D covers prescription drugs including GLP-1 medications when they are prescribed for a covered indication (primarily type 2 diabetes). Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan.
