Does Medicare Cover Wegovy for Weight Loss? 2025 Guide
Medicare Coverage for Wegovy
Current Status: Not Covered for Weight Loss Only
Medicare does not currently cover Wegovy when prescribed solely for weight loss or obesity management.
Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) was approved by the FDA specifically for chronic weight management. Despite its approval, Medicare Part D plans cannot currently cover drugs used only for weight loss — a restriction carried over from the 1990s Medicare statute, though this exclusion is being challenged through legislative action.
If You Have Diabetes
If you have type 2 diabetes AND are prescribed a semaglutide product (such as Ozempic), your Part D plan may cover it for the diabetes indication. The coverage depends on your specific plan's formulary.
Out-of-Pocket Costs Without Coverage
Without Medicare coverage, Wegovy can cost $1,300–$1,500/month at retail. Novo Nordisk offers a savings program for eligible commercial insurance patients, but these typically do not apply to Medicare beneficiaries.
