What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP-1 receptor agonist. By activating both receptors, it may produce greater weight loss than semaglutide alone. Clinical trials (SURMOUNT program) showed average weight loss of 20-22% over 72 weeks at maximum dose.

FDA Approval Status

FDA-approved: Zepbound for chronic weight management (2023), Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes (2022).

Dosing Schedule

2.5mg once weekly for 4 weeks, then increased by 2.5mg every 4 weeks to a maximum of 15mg/week.

Eligibility Criteria

Adults with BMI ≥30 kg/m², or BMI ≥27 kg/m² with at least one weight-related condition.
