What is Wegovy?
Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) was the first GLP-1 medication specifically approved by the FDA for weight management. It is the same molecule as Ozempic but at a higher dose optimized for weight loss. Average clinical trial weight loss: ~15% of body weight over 68 weeks.
FDA Approval Status
FDA-approved June 2021 for chronic weight management in adults. First GLP-1 specifically approved for obesity.
Dosing Schedule
Subcutaneous injection: 0.25mg → 0.5mg → 1mg → 1.7mg → 2.4mg, escalating every 4 weeks.
Eligibility Criteria
BMI ≥30 kg/m², or BMI ≥27 kg/m² with a weight-related comorbidity.
Common Side Effects
- Nausea (very common early in treatment)
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Heartburn
